Optical bleaching of gamma-irradiated KCl at room temperature

An investigation was made of the effects of bleaching temperature and initial concentration of F centers on the bleaching phenomena in gamma-irradiated KCl. From the bleaching curves at 18 and --25 °C for specimens irradiated to various dosages, the concentration N_q of quickly bleaching F centers was obtained. The dependence of N_q on the gamma dosage for the two bleaching temperatures is graphically lllustrated. For dosages less than 3 x 10⁶ r, there is no difference in N_q for the two bleaching temperatures. The dependence of the ratio of N_q at --25 °C to the initial concentration N_f of F centers on the gamma dose is shown. The results seem to show that the quickly bleaching component of F centers at room temperature is composed of two parts. The one related to complex center formation increases with bleaching temperature; the other is independent of bleaching temperature. The latter may be caused by recombinations of electrons with positive holes at some hole trapping centers that have larger cross sections for electron trapping than those that correspond to more stable F centers. The formation mechanism of F centers in the early stage seems to be different from that in the later stage, which may cause the differences in the trapping states of positive holes recombining with electrons from F centers.
