INTERACTION OF 26 Mev DEUTERONS WITH C$sup 1$$sup 2$
Targets containing natural carbon were bombarded with 26-Mev deuterons. The outgoing protons and deuterons were detected and identified with an E-dE/dx type particle identification system. Absolute differential cross se were measured simultaneously for elastic scattering on C/sup 12/, inelastic scattering corresponding to the levels in C/sup 12/ at 4.43 (2/sup +/), 7.65 (0/sup +/ ), and 9.63 Mev (2/sup +/), and for the C/sup 12/(d,p) reaction to the ground state and to the first excited state at 3.09 Mev in C/sup 13/. The angular distribution for elastic scattering was analyzed in terms of simple diffraction models. A comparison was made with the theoretical curves according to the sharp cutoff model with and without Coulomb phase-shifts and with the Fraunhofer prediction. The cross section curves corresponding to the excitation of the 4.43 and 7.65-Mev levels were compared with theoretical curves according to the inelastic diffraction model. Although fair agreement between theory and experiment could be established for the elastic scattering, this was impossible for the inelastic case. However, the yields of the inelastic scattering from the 4.43 and 7.65-Mev levels agree with a collective nature of the transitions to the corresponding nuclear states. The angular distributions of the proton groups of the C/sup 12/(d,p)C/sup 13/ reaction were analyzed in terms of the Butler- Bornapproximation model. (auth)
