The hyperfine structure of 209Bi

Journal Article · · Philosophical Magazine
The hyperfine structure (H.F.S.) of the J = 3/2 ground state of Bi/sup 209/was found by the atomic beam magnetic resonance method. Two of the three H.F.S. intervals were measured directly, giving (W/sub 50/ - W/sup 50/),/h =2884.7 plus or minus 0.2 Mc/s and (W/sub 40/- W/sub 50/)/h = 2171.5 plus or minus 0.1 Mc/s. The results are consistent with a magnetic dipole interaction constant A of -446.97 plus or minus 0.04 Mc/s and an electric quadruple interaction constant B of -303.3 plus or minus 0.3 Mc/s. The latter yields an uncorrected nuclear electric quadrupole moment of --0.34 barns, and the field dependence of DELTA F = 0 transitions gives --l.6433 plus or minus 0.0002 for the ground state g/sub j/ value.
