A method for manufacturing sheathed fuel elements containing He for leak detection is patented. The sheath containing the fuel is evacuated and then filled to atmospheric pressure with a mixture of 5% He and 95% O by volume. The sheath is completely sealed, and the fuel element is heated, so that the O is taken up by the fuel. In this way only a minor quantity of the leak-testing He is inside the sheath, and excess pressures are not built up within the sheath with further heating. (M.P.G.)
