A gain stabilization arrangement is described wherein the voltage U/sub b/ between the Nth and (N + 1)th dynode of a photomultiplier tube is held fixed with a floating battery supply. A voltage-dropping resistance R/sub a/ placed in the bleeder string between the Nth and (N + 2)th dynode, is then properly adjusted. The value of R/sub a/ is chosen such that, with the total photomultiplier voltage U/sub f/ and the voltage U/sub b/ held constant, the gain versus resistance has negative slope and the gain is equal to half its maximum value. The value of R/sub a/ must in this way be individually adjusted for each type of photomultiplier tube and also for each individual tube of a given type. Curves are given for pulseamplitude versus U/sub f/ for- EMI 6097-F and FEU-29 photomultiplier tubes. (TTT)
