Low-manganese stainless steel was prepared as reactor structural material with a low neutron cross section, and the mechanical properties and corrosion properties were investigated. It was observed that general properties other than hot working properties were not affected significantly by lowering manganese content. The hot working properties became poorer when manganese content was lowered, but this was overcome by adding a small amount of zirconium. Vacuum fusion was also effective in recovering the hot working properties. With regard to corrosion properties, the stability of the passive state was increased by lowering the manganese content. The addition of zirconium had little effect on corrosion properties as long as the content was low. (Nucl. Sci. Abstr. Japan, Vol. 2, No. 4)
