ANALYTICAL METHOD FOR THE SPECTROGRAPHIC DETERMINATION OF BORON IN CAST URANIUM METAL USING THE CARRIER DISTILLATION TECHNIQUE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4105241
The uranium metal is converted to U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ by ignition and is then mixed with ammonium fluoride carrier. Charges of the mixture are spectrographed using the carrier distillation technique. Chemically analyzed samples are used for the preparation of calibration curves. Spectra are evaluated by means of either a non-recording microphotometer or cathode ray microphotometer, depending on the concentration of boron present. The method is applicable to samples of uranium metal containing between 0.02 and 0.6 ppm boron. For concentrations between 6.62 and 0.2 ppm boron, a cathode ray microphotometer is used to evaluate the spectra. The precision at the 0.09 ppm level is plus or minus 20 to 25% (3 x sigma). (auth)
