DETERMINATION OF ZIRCONIUM IN NIOBIUM ALLOYS (in Russian)

Journal Article · · Zavodskaya Lab.

The usual complexometric titration of zirconium cannot be carried out in the presence of niobium because the tartric acid, which must be added to prevent the hydrolysis of the latter element, interferes with the tltration. Therefore an amperometric method was developed for determining the zirconium by back titrating the excess of complexone/sup (+)/with a 0.01M bismuth salt solution, using dropping mercury as indicator electrode and a saturated calomel electrode as reference, at a pH = 2. Tests with synthetic mixtures indicated that good results can be obtained even with a 20 to 30 fold excess of niobium in the solution; even the presence of molybdenum and of tungsten can be tolerated. Up to 3% the zirconium may be determined directly; at lower concentrations the niobium must first be removed from the system. (TTT)
