CORROSION RESISTANCE OF IMPROVED ZIRCONIUM ALLOYS IN HIGH-TEMPERATURE STEAM

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4102178

The corrosion behavior of zirconium alloys is being investigated in superheated steam. Corrosion rates, oxide layers, and hydrogen embrittlement are studied. It was found that Zr--Nb alloys with about 0.5 to 2.5% Nb are considerably more corrosion resistant in steam above 400 deg C than Zircaloy-2 and Zircaloy-4. The corrosion rates of binary Zr--Nb alloys in the range of 0.5 to 1% Nb could be lowered to a general extent by several ternary alloying elements. The effectiveness of a ternary alloy was found to depend on the concentration level in some cases. (M.C.G.)
