The use of the Mossbauer effect in the study of solids is indicated by giving a survey of the types of information obtainable. The subjects discussed are a description of the Mossbauer effect, the unsplit spectrum, hfs in the spectrum, quadrupole splitting in the spectrum, and chemical or isomeric displacement of the spectrum.
