A SOURCE OF POLARIZED IONS AND DETECTION OF THE POLARIZATION OF DEUTERONS

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:4101077
A deuterium source with high frequency circular discharge is described. Atoms with hyperfine structure level - 1/2 are separated from the beam by a magnetic quadrupole field. Atoms with + 1/2 are focused into an ion source and ionized in a magnetic field using a vacuum of 10/sup -8/ mm Hg. Deuterons from this source are accelerated through 100 kev. A tritium-titanium target is used for neutron production. From the ratio of neutron counts for angles of 0 and 90 deg , it is inferred that the polarization parameter has a value of 0.74. This ion source gives a deuteron current of 0.5 x 10/sup -7/ amp. (Gmelin Inst.)
