PROPERTIES OF A SOURCE OF POLARIZED IONS AND THE DETERMINATION OF THE INTENSITY AND POLARIZATION DEGREE OF PROTONS

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:4081507
The construction of an ion source and a separation magnet for the production of polarized protons and deuterons is described. A quadrupole field gives the same polarization degree and beam intensity as a six pole field. The source emits a proton current of 3.5 x 10/sup -8/ amp with a polarization degree of 48%. Methods for the measurement of beam intensities are discussed. The separation of orthohydrogen with the same apparatus using a source that was cooled with liquid nitrogen results in current of 0.8 x 10/sup -9/ amp. (Gmelin Inst.)
