The development of the technique of coating fuel particles with pyrolytic carbon and silicon carbide is described. Evaluation studies include an investigation of the variation of coating thickness with particle size and of deposition rate with batch size. Experience of operating the prototype production scale fluidised bed has shown the need for some design modifications. The technique used for consolidating coated fuel particles into graphitic-matrix fuel bodies is described in detail.
