A process is given for depositing pyrolytic graphite on particles of thorium and/or uranium oxide or carbide, to produce coated fuel particles which effectively retain fission products. In the method, the pyrolytic graphite is produced by the thermal decomposition of a hydrocarbon gas in the presence of the particles, at 1500 to 3000 deg C and 1 to 200 mm Hg. A graphite reactor for carrying out the process is described. Several examples of the process are given. The process is a modification of that described in British Patent 943,719. (D.L.C.)
