IMPROVEMENTS IN MATERIALS FOR CONTROL RODS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4097895
Ceramic neutron-absorbing materials, consisting of B/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and one or more of the oxides of Mg, Ca, Al, and Si, the Batoms constituting 12 to 35% of the total number of atoms. The materials are prepared by either melting and casting or pressing and sintering a powderous mixture; a combination of both methods is also possible, e.g., a mixture of MgO (20), B/sub 2/O/sub 2/ (9), and SiO/sub 2/ (1 mole) is melted at 1400 ts and cooled; the mass is ground, pressed, and sintered at 1100 to 1300 ts C. A tubular control rod is described which consists of 60 annular elements manufactared in this way and having an external diameter of 62 mm and a wall thickness of 6 mm, piled up in a double-walled stainless-steel tube.
