Gauge-free quantization of massless boson fields

A gauge-independent quantization procedure is developed for arbitrary- spin, massless boson fields. The general spin-S wave equation is analyzed in the spin-coefficient formalism. The constraint problem is then found to be trivial, and all the field variables are expessed in terms of one complex field. Canonical quantization of this field is carried through, and conserved quantities are constructed. The formalism leads to a new expression for the energy density of a gravitational field.
