AN INVESTIGATION OF THE EFFECT OF METALLIC ADDITIONS UPON THE OXIDATION RESISTANCE OF TITANIUM-MODIFIED NbAl$sub 3$. Final Report, September 1, 1962-August 31, 1963
The air-oxidation resistance of a (Nb-Ti)Al/sub 3/ compound with alloy additions of tin, silicon, or chromium and silicor in combination was investigated. Thermogravimetric determinations of the specific weight gain as a function of exposure time in dry flowing air were made. Arc-melted alloy specimens were oxidized for periods of from 8 to 24 hr at temperatures of 760, 860, 960, 1060, 1160, 1260, and 1360 deg C (1400, 1580, 1760, 1940, 2120, 2300, and 2480 deg F). The base compound contained niobium and titanium in the atomic ratio of 3: 1, respectively. Alloy additions of 1.0, 3.0, 5.0, 7.0, 10.0, 15.0, and 20.0 wt% increments were made to the base material along two composition direction lines in the case of silicon and tin additions, and along one composition direction line for the chromium-- silicon combination additions. A second of 3:2 was also studied. Tin additions of 1.0, 3.0, 5.0, and 7.0 wt% along one composition direction line were made to this base and thermogravimetric runs at 960 and 1160 deg C (1760 and 2120 deg F) were conducted. The oxidation data obtained are reported in terms of engineering values of specific weight changes as function of time and temperature and, also, an evaluation of the oxidation kinetics is presented. A survey study of the phase equilibria of the as-cast and isothermally annealed alloys was conducted and the results are presented. A basic oxidation study of NbAl/sub 3/, (Nb--Ti)Al/sub 3/, amd an (Nb- -Ti)Al/sub 3/-- 1.0% Sn alloy was made and the oxidation rate laws determined. The kinetic data from these studies are presented. (auth)
