The annular gas discharge in a toroidal vessel of a thermonuclear reactor is shielded from the wall of the torus by a continuous covering having an electrical resistance around the circumference of the torus that is much higher than the resistance of the discharge. The covering can be undulated to increase the effective length of the circumference and can be made of stainless steel. (NPO)
