THE ROLLING TEXTURE AND STACKING-FAULT ENERGY OF THORIUM, CERIUM AND THORIUM-CERIUM ALLOYS
Texture determinations on pure thorium and a range of cerium--thorium alloys indicated that thorium has a stacking fault energy higher than copper ( gamma -- 70 ergs/cm). It was found, also, from texture determinations, that at high deformations in rolling at room temperature, the gamma /sub fcc/ to BETA (hexagonal) transformation occurs in pure cerium. This indicates a stacking fault energy for cerium approaching zero. As little as 10% thorium added to the cerium is sufficient to raise its stacking fault energy to about 40 ergs/ cm/sub 2/. (auth)
