The acceleration of an electron at electron cyclotron resonance is studied. It is shown that allowance for the relativistic variation of the mass of a particle changes the picture of the electron-cyclotron interaction qualitatively. The frequencies and amplitudes of the variations in the energy of the particle are found. The best conditions for pumping energy from the rf field to the particle do not occur when the resonance condition is satisfied exactly but at a frequency somewhat lower than the cyclotron frequency. A mechanism for nonlinear generation of low-frequency waves associated with the relativistic variations of the electron energy is proposed. (AIP)
