THE METABOLISM OF RADIOIODINE AND RADIATION DOSAGE IN MAN

Journal Article · · Brit. J. Radiol.

The metabolism of iodine in man is briefly considered in relation to radiation dosage from radioactive iodine. The different isotopes of iodine are enumerated and their properties and uses mentioned. Radiation dosage to the thyroid gland and to the various tissues of the body is estimated, with special reference to I/sup 131/, I/sup 132/ and I/sup 133/ and attention is drawn to the relatively high dose given to the infant's thyroid, high mainly because of the low gland mass. Alteration in radioiodine metabolism because of thyroid disease and of administration of drugs is discussed. The hazards of radioiodine and methods of protection therefrom are considered. It is suggested that iodide administration is the most useful method. (auth)
