INVESTIGATIONS ON MUTABILITY OF POLYGENES AND ON UTILIZATION OF INDUCED GENETIC VARIABILITY. Report of Scientific Activity Due After Completion of Three Years of Operation

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4095088

Observations on the R/sub 2/, R/sub 3/, and R/sub 4/ generations of maize from irradiated plants indicate an increase of genetic variability for most of the traits studied. The response to radiation was not proportional to dose in the 1500- to 3000-r range studied. A significant increase of genetic variation for many morphological as well as yield characteristics was found in tetraploid and hexaploid varieties of wheat grown from seeds exposed to doses of 10,000 to 20,000 r x radiation. The increase was more evident in the R/sub 3/ generation. Preliminary results are included from genetic studies in several varieties of wheat, tobacco, tomato, alfalfa, and Habrobracon after various x ray treatments. (C.H.)
