A MASS SPECTROMETER FOR THE DETERMINATION OF RELATIVE ABUNDANCES OF Li ISOTOPES IN SOLIDS. Thesis

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:4092162
Methods for the measurement of the natural isotopic abundance of Li are discussed. The construction of a mass spectrometer for the analysis of solids is described. The influence of mass dependence of the evaporation, focusing of the ions, and secondary effects in the collector on accuracy and reproducibility are discussed in detail. An equation for the vapor pressure of LiCl for pressures between 10/sup -10/and 10/sup -6/ mm Hg is given. The accuracy for abundance measurements of LiCl is 0.2%. With this method an isotopic ratio for Li of 12.41 was obtained. (Gmelin Inst.)
