RADIATION DAMAGE OF QUARTZ AND FUSED SILICA INDUCED BY HEAVY NEUTRON IRRADIATION. Final Report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4091726
Lattice defects in natural and synthetic quartz crystals exposed to 1 x 10/sup 19/ to 1.5 x 10/sup 20/ nvt of fast neutrons were studied by x-ray and transmission electron microscopy methods. A correlation was found between the clusters rich in interstitial Si atoms and the strain distribution, and the decrease in density is satisfactorily explained. Contrary to popular opinion, heavily irradiated quartz crystals still exhibit crystallinity, and the structures of heavily irradiated quartz and fused silica are different. The mechanism of the increase of the thermal conductivity of fused silica is considered. (D.L.C.)
