CRYSTALLINITY IN FUSED SILICA INDUCED BY FAST NEUTRON IRRADIATION

Fast-neutron irradiated fused silica specimens were studied by the transmission electron diffraction method and the patterns compared with unirradiated control specimens. The crystalline alpha -quartz pattern was observed only in the very heavily irradiated samples. Specimens irradiated at (1 -- 1.6) x 10/sup 19/ nvt did not show crystalline patterns. Crystalline patterns were observed in specimens irradiated at 8.6 x 10/sup 19/ to 2.9 x 10/sup 20/ nvt. (C.E.S.)
