The fuel element consists of a metallic core and a ceramic or refractory can which is permeable to fission gases but impermeable to liquid uranium and has a low neutron absorption. Preferred caming materials are graphite, BeO, MgO, and Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/. In an embodiment of the invention the can consists of a cylindrical container and a top cover. The cylinder can be provided with lateral centering fins. (NPO)
