>On activating a trace metal by neutron irradiation, extraction and ion- exchange processes can be used to advantage in separating interfering activities. The efficiency of separation was evaluated for a 99.9% recovery of the product with <0.1% cross-contamination by an interfering impurity. The logarithms of the extraction constant K were tabulated for various cations such as Ag/sup +/, Al/ sup 3+/, Am/sup 3+/, Ba/sup Bk/sup 3+/, Cd/sup 2+/, C/sup 3+/, Co/sup 2+/, Cu/sup 2+/, Dy/sup 3+/, Es/sup 3+ /, Fe/sup 3+/, Fm/sup 3+/, Gd/sup 3+/, Hg/sup 2+/, In/ sup 3+/, Ni/sup 2+/, Pb/sup 2+/, Pu/sup 3+/, Pu/sup 4+/, PuO/sup 2+/, and others with the organic complexing agents such as acetylacetone (AA) benzoylacetone (BA), dibenzoylmethane (DBM), 8-hydroxyquinolin (Ox), cupferron (Cup), and dithizone (Dz). Use of the equations is illustrated by the separation of Hg from Cu as the acetylacetonates. Trace amounts of Cu, Zn, and Mo in GeO/sub 2/ can be determined by extracting the Cu as the dithizonate at pH = 1, Zn as the dithizonate at pH = 7, and Mo as the 8-hydroxyquinolate nt a pH = 1.3. This separation by extraction is simpler than the classical method, which involves the distillntion of GeO/sub 2/, the electrolysis of Cu, and many other steps. The same type of separation may be carried out on an ion exchanger by proper selection of the complexing agent. The stability constants of a number of metals are tabulated for the oxalate complexes, the tartrate complexes, the cyanide complexes, and complexes with NTA (nitriloacetic acid), EDTA (ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid), and HEDTA (1,2-diaminocyclohexane tetraacetic acid). The selective separation of two metals by ion exchange is discussed. (TTT)
