(/cap alpha/,p) REACTIONS IN MEDIUM WEIGHT ELEMENTS

Journal Article · · Nuclear Phys.
Thin targets of V/sup 51/, Co/sup 59/, Ni/sup 58/ Ni/sup 60/, Cu/sup 6/ / sup 3/, and Cu/sup 65/ were bombarded with alpha particles of laboratory energies of 19.3, 45, 90, and 135/sup o/ were measured by means of an ionization chamber. Two groups of protons were seen. One group contains almost exclusively protons boiled off from the compound nucleus and only a very small number of protons created in direct interactions. The other group with energies below the Coulomb barrier contains protons emitted from daughters of the compound nucleus, i.e., secondary protons from ( alpha .np), ( alpha .2p), and ( alpha . alpha p) reactions. Both groups show symmetry around 90/sup o/. The first group is only slightly anisotropic, whereas the second group exhibits a considerably higher anisotropy, indicating higher angular momenta for the secondary emitted protons. Using the formula from the statistical theory, the variation of the level density ? with the excitation energy E* was deduced from the spectral shape of the first group of protons. For the range of excitation energies 6 to 10 Mev, the spectra are consistent with a constant temperature of the order of one Mev. However, the values obtained for the temperature increase with increasing energy of the bombarding alpha particles. (auth)
