SOME STUDIES IN THE INORGANIC CHEMISTRY OF THE REACTION BETWEEN URANYL FLUORIDE AND CHLORINE TRIFLUORIDE

A study was made of the reaction between uranyl fluoride and chlorine trifluoride at 50, 100, and 150 deg C. In the experiments at 100 and 150 deg C, almost all the chlorine trifluoride reacted in 10 min. At 50 deg C, only about half the chlorine trifluoride was profitably used after 30 min. The other gaseous reaction products were O/sub 2/, Cl/sub 2/, CIF, and ClO/sub 2/F, with the possibility that ClO/sub 2/ acted as a reaction intermediate. The assignation of stoichiometrical equations was complicated by side reactions of the reactive halogen gases both with residual water in the uranyl fluoride and with the walls of the reaction vessel.
