PROCESS AND APPLIANCE FOR PRODUCING INTENSE MAGNETIC FIELDS FOR THE PURPOSE OF CONFINING A PLASMA

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4087142
BS>A process is described in which a gas is introduced peripherally into a highly evacuated cylindrical enclosure immediately after a central plasma column is produced in it. The gas is subjected to a series of electric discharges coaxial with the central plasma column and is caused to assume the shape of a centripetally moving annular column that compresses the azimuthal field confining the central plasma column. The annular column is formed from a sheet of lithium or aluminum and the central column of plasma is an ionized mixture of deuterium and tritium that is obtained by vaporizing a wire of tritiated lithium deuteride. The electric discharges are of the order of several tens of kilovolts at a hundred per second. Magnetic fields of several megagauss are possible. (R.E.U.)
