Results of a fundamental study of zirconium carbide-tantalum carbide systems are reported. Data on microhardness, lattice parameters, electrical resistivity, and Young's modulus were obtained over a range of compositions. The investigation was conducted primarily to find an explanation for anomalies such as the increased melting temperature, strength, and creep resistance observed in these solid soluticns. Results irdicate the existence of a complete, stablc solid solution series between these carbides. (J.R.D.)
