Determination of Sodium, Antimony, Arsenic and Copper in Lead Metal by Neutron Activation Analysis with Radiochemical Separation (in Japanese)

Journal Article · · Nippon Kagaku Zasshi (Journal of the Chemistry Society of Japan, Pure Chemistry Section)
A destructive neutron activation method was applied to the determination of small amounts of impurities in lead metal. About 1 g of the sample was irradiated simultaneously with standard either at a neutron flux of about a x 10/ sup 11/ n/cm/sup 2//sec for 3 day, or 2 hr, or at a neutron flux of about 10/sup 1/2 n/cm/sup 2//sec for 20 min or 32 hr. Antimony, arsenic, and copper in the irradiated lead metal were isolated chemically as antimony trisulfide, arsenic trisulfide, and cuprous thiocyannte in the radiochemically pure state and were determined by the total gamma ray measurements, comparing the activities of Sb/ sup 122/, As/sup 76/, and Cu/sup 64/ with those of standards. Sodium was determined by the gamma spectrometry, comparing the photo-peak height of Na/sup 24/ with that of standard. All the results were compared with those of the nondestructive method. Not much difference was observed between the results of the two methods, except in the case of arsenlc and copper. The large difference between the analytical results of arsenic and copper in the two methods may be due to the fact that, in the non-destructive method, the analysis of the decay curve of the photopeak at about 0.5 Mev into the decay curves of Cu/sup 64/ (half life: 12.8 hr), As/sup 76/ (half life: 26.8 hr) and Sb/sup 122/ (half life: 2.8 day) was not correct.
