THERMOCOUPLE DEVELOPMENT FOR THE LITHIUM-COOLED REACTOR EXPERIMENT

A refractory metal thermocouple consisting of W--5 Re/ W--26 Re grounded junction thermoelements and alumina insulation, and clad with a I/8-inch OD, Nb-- 1 Zr-to-type 316 stainless steel co-extruded sheath was selected to be the primary temperature sensor on the Lithium-Cooled Reactor Experiment (LCRE). The work described was done to develop this thermocouple and to gain experience in using it. Although the W--5 Re/W--26 Re thermocouple was selected for primary usage, other thermocouple combinations were also studied on a parallel effort in case the W--5 Re/W--26 Re combination could not be used. They were also studied for the other test-related purposes since many LCRE requirements did not warrant the use of tungsten rhenium thermocouples. The additional thermocouple combinations studied were Chromel/Alumel, W--3 Re/W-25 Re, molybdenum/niobium, and Mo/W -26 Re. Results are also reported of work performed to improve thermocouple quality and fabrication techniques. A complete set of Pratt & Whitney Aircraft-CANEL specifications for thermocouples and thermocouple extension wire is included. (auth)
