GAMMA SPECTROMETRY WITH SCINTILLATION COUNTER AND SINGLE-CHANNEL PULSE- HEIGHT ANALYZER (in German)
Luminescence excitation in NaI(Tl) crystals by gamma radintion is discussed. Photoeffect, Compton effect, pair formation, total absorption, and excitation by primarily formed electrons are described. The transformation of luminescence into electric pulses and their evaluation using photomultipliers and pulse-height-distribution registers are discussed. The formation of a simple line spectra as in Cs/sup 137/ yields Ba/sup 137*/, a many-line spectra as for Co/sup 60/, a spectrum with pair-formation effects as in Na/sup 24/, the spectrum of a positron emitter such as Na , a spectrum with escape lines as for Tm/sup 170/ , and the spectrum of a K-emitter such as Fe/sup 55/ is descnlbed. The resolution possibility of a scintillation spectrometer is discussed. The influence of such opernting conditions as voltage fluctuations, temperature changes, and pulse rate variations on the intensification of a scintillation counter is considered. The effects of the geometry of the test arrangement, the statistics of radioactive decay, and the distontion of the register curve on the form of the spectrum are discussed. Suppression of disturbing radiation by measurement in the channel is described. (M.C.G.)
