SYNTHESIS OF METHYL ISOCYANIDE

The preparation of essentially pure methyl isocyanide is described. The compound was prepared by decomposing a solid complex of methyl iodide and silver cyanide with an aqueous potassium cyanide solution. Methyl isocyanide was separated by distillation through a packed column and purified by passing the vapors, under vacuum, through appropriate contaminant-removing reagents. (auth)
