We have studied the properties of the reactions $pi$$sup +$d $Yields$ p/ sub s/p$pi$$sup +$$pi$$sup +$$pi$$sup -$$pi$$sup -$ and $pi$$sup +$d $Yields$ p/ sub s/p$pi$$sup +$$pi$$sup +$$pi$$sup -$$pi$$sup -$$pi$$sup 0$ at 13.1 GeV/c with a sensitivity of 9.7 events/$mu$b. We find the cross sections for these reactions to be 490 +- 30 $mu$b and 590 +- 50 $mu$b, respectively. There is significant resonance production in the two reactions, but particular final states are difficult to isolate because of the restricted phase space and permutational complexity. The general kinematic features of the reactions are presented, and a binary longitudinal-phase-space analysis is applied to the data. By using these techniques the cross sections for the most important contributions to the final states are determined. It is found that significant resonance production occurs in the first reaction, but very little in the second reaction with the additional $pi$$sup 0$. (AIP)
