DEUTERON ELECTRIC QUADRUPOLE MOMENT

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Letters
The deuteron electric quadrapole moment Q is calculated by deriving theoretically the electric field gradient q along the molecular axis at one deuteron for the quadrupole coupling constant eQq. With the use of a trial molecular wave function constructed in the framework of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation which gives a molecular binding energy of 4.728 ev, Q is calculated to be 282 x 10/sup -27/ cm/sup 2/, about 3% larger than Newell's Q value.
