Hyperfine constants for the molecular ion D{sub 2}{sup +} and the electric quadrupole moment of the deuteron

Precise calculations are presented for the hyperfine constants b{sub 1}F (Fermi contact parameter), c (magnetic dipole-dipole parameter), and d (spin-rotation parameter) of the molecular ion D{sub 2}{sup +}, obtained using the techniques. We investigate, in addition, the additional small coupling eqQ arising from the electric quadrupole moment Q of the deuteron, where -e < 0 is the electron charge and q is the {open_quotes}electric field gradient{close_quotes} at the nucleus. Spectroscopic experiments to date on D{sub 2}{sup +} are reviewed and the prospects for an accurate determination of the deuteron quadrupole moment are determined.
