RADIOACTIVE ISOTOPES IN MEDICAL PRACTICE

Journal Article · · Hosp. Progr.
OSTI ID:4082946
Some of the more pertinent elementary physics of radioisotopes, as a background for establishing a small or basic radioisotope department, are reviewed. Material in the medical literature on various aspects of this subject is discussed and a list of references is appended. Radioisotope instrumentation is described, including specifications and applications of the Geiger-Mueller tube, sintiliation detectors, scalers, and ratemeters. Counting errors and efficiency are explained, and examples of technical problems encountered are illustrated by reference to I/sup 131/ thyroid uptake studies. (BBB)
