SPIN AND NUCLEAR MOMENTS OF 2.3-DAY Cd$sup 115$m AND OF 43-DAY Cd$sup 115$m

The Zeeman structure and hfs in the (5s5p)/sup 3/P/sub 1/ state of 2.3- day Cd/sup 115/ and 43-day Cd/sup 115m/ were determined by the optical double- resonance technique. The nuclear spin I, magnetic dipole coupling constant A, and electric quadrupole coupling constant B, are: I(115) = 1/2, A(115) = -4484(2) Mc; I(115m) = 11/2, A(1l5m) = -657.6(6) Mc, B(115m) = +131(6) Mc. lf nuclear structure and quadrupole shielding effects are neglected, the corresponding nuclear moments are: mu (115) = --0.6469(3) mu /sub n/, mu (115m) = Cd/sup 115m/ and Cd/sup 109/ quadrupole moments is Q(115m)/Q(109) = tions. The Cd/sup 115/ nuclear moment is compared with the moment predicted for a (3s?sub 1/2/)/sup 1/ (1h/sub 11/2/)sub 2/ neutron assignme nt with configuration mixing. The Cd/sup 115m/- moment is compared with the moments predicted for both a (3s/sub 1/2/)/sup 0/(1h/sub 11/2/)su p 3/ and a (3s/sub 1/2/)/sup 2/(1h/sub 11/2/)/sup 1/ assignment. Both isomers were pr oduced by (n, gamma ) reactions on Cd/sup 114/. The longer-lived isomer, 43-day Cd/sup 115m/, was separated from the Cd/sup 114/ with an electromagnetic mass separator; about 10/sup 11/ atoms were obtained in the resonance cell. No mass separation was performed on the Cd/sup 115/, but it was identified from the decay of the resonances over a 6-day period. The half life deduced from the observed decay is T/sub 1/2/ = 41(7) h, as compared with the accepted value of 56 h. (auth)
