A method is given for the preparation of granular zirconium pyrophosphate for use as an adsorbent in separating plutonium from irradiated uranium. In this method, zirconium orthophosphate is precipitated from solution and converted into pyrophosphate by dehydration. The applications of this adsorbent material to plutonium separation are illustrated by many examples using irradiated uranium in which the effects of various factors (e.g., uranyl ions) on absorption and elution of plutonium are studied.
