PROCESS FOR THE SEPARATION OF PLUTONIUM
Patent
·
OSTI ID:4818278
A process is outlined for separating radioactive elements from plutonium in irradiated uranium. The process comprises forming an acid solution of the irradiated uranium with a pH of 2 or less, precipitating plutonous iodate, dissolving the precipitate in acid, oxidizing the plutonium to the hexavalent state, and precipitating an insoluble iodate to leave a supernatant plutonyl iodate solution. The preferred insoluble iodate carrier is cerium or thorium iodate. An example of the process is given in which plutonium is separated from irradiated uranyl nitrate hexahydrate. (D.L.C.)
