THE TWO NEUTRINOS (in Hungarian)

In order to explain the contradictions observed in the energy spectrum of electrons and positrons emitted during BETA decay, the existence of the neutrino was postulated by W. Pauli in 1933. Dirac equations require the existence of the antineutrino: both particles are electrically neutral, with a spin of 1/2, while their mass and magnetic moment are zero. Double BETA decay was considered useful for differentiating between these two similar particles, which are considered as being identical by the theory of E. Majorana. The available experimental data support Dirac's neutrino theory but the methods used were not sensitive enough to state unequivocally that the neutrino and the antineutrino are not identical. A. Salam, L. Landau, T. D. Lee, and C. N. Yang developed simultaneously the 2component neutrino theory, according to which a given neutrino has only one spin state, in which the spin and the pulse are antiparallel, defining jointly the helicity of the neutrino. More recently, G. Danby et al., proved experimentally the existence of two types of neutrinos on the basis of the pi yields mu + gamma ' decay. (Review article, 16 references). (TTT)
