The solubility of zirconium dioxide in molten potassium fluoborate was studied. The fluorination of ZrO/sub 2/ by boron trifluoride takes place in the presence of potassium fluoride according to the following reaction: 9KF + 4BF/sub 3/ + 3ZrO/sub 2/ yields 3K/sub 3/ZrF/sub 7/ + 2B/sub 2/O/sub 3/. The reaction of ZrO/sub 2/ with molten potassium fluoborate follows two reaction stages: at temperatures up to 550 to 800 deg the first stage is expressed by 6KBF/sub 4/ + 3ZrO/sub 2/ yields 2BF/sub 3/ + 3K/sub 2/ZrF/sub 6/ + 2B/s ub 2/O/sub 3/, and the second at temperatures above 600 deg is described by the equation 3K/sub 2/ ZrF/sub 6/ + 3KBF/sub 4/ yields 3K/sub 3/ZrF/sub 7/ + 3BF/ sub 3/, also, the overall reaction is: 9KBF/sub 4/ + 3ZrO/sub 2/ yields 5BF/sub 3/ + 3KaZrF/sub 7 2B/sub 2/O/sub 3/. Separation of BF/sub 3/ (second stage) takes place due to the thermal decomposition of KBF/sub 4/ liberating KF in the presence of K/sub 2/ZrF/ sub 6/ which transforms into a more stable complex K/sub 3/ZrF/sub 7/. Introduction of potassium fluoride into the reaction mixture prevents BF/sub 3/ separation. (R.V.J.)
