MAGNETOACOUSTIC RESONANCE AND DECAY OF A PLASMA (in German)

Journal Article · · Helvetica Physica Acta (Switzerland)

An experimental and theoretical investigation was made of the magnetoacoustic resonance in a cylindrical argon plasma. The plasma, which was immersed in an axial magnetic field, was generated by a discharge current and was highly ionized. The wave was excited at the plasma boundary by an auxiliary B/ sub z/-coil and traveled radially to the center of the cylinder. Linearized theory was used to obtain the solution for the general case of partial ionization. The solutions for resonance curves and radial distribution of the wave magnetic field are presented with the degree of ionization as a parameter. Measurements are shown to be in good agreement with theory. It is shown that magnetoacoustic resonance can be used as a diagnostic method for determination of the ion density of a partially ionized plasma. Densities measured spectroscopically from Stark broadening of the H/sub BETA / line were in agreement with densities measured with magnetoacoustic resonance within the errors. The decay of the ion density, which followed the cooling of the plasma, is discussed. (auth)
