BIOLOGICAL, CHEMICAL AND RADIOCHEMICAL STUDIES OF MARINE PLANKTON. Progress Report for the Period January 1-December 31, 1960. Appendix B to Reference No. 61-6

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4079375

Procedures are described for the determination of total and carbonate carbon in marine plankton. Data are included from stadies of the physiological ecology of a marine diatom, Skeletonema costatum; the identification of a new calanoid copepod, Candacia ketchumi, from the Sargasso Sa; an analysis of zooplankton collected between New York and Bermuda; the horizontal distribution of phytoplankton; the distribution of phytoplankton species with respect to salinity and other variables between the coast of New England and Bermuda; the persistence of winter water on the continental shelf south of Long Island, N. Y.; the rate of phosphorus uptake and exchange by Phaeodactrlum tricornutum; the applications of observations of vertical and horizontal distributions of radioactive rare earths from fall-out in geochemical and hydrodynamic studies of the Atlantic Ocean; nitrification by marine organisms; the enviromnental physiology of marine phytoplankton; measurements of the distribution of clinorophyll, phosphorus, and dissolved oxygen in the Red Sea; and the interrelation of water-soluble yellow substances and chloroplastic pigments in marine algae.
