ANGULAR DISTRIBUTION AND POLARIZATION OF NEUTRONS ELASTICALLY SCATTERED BY LEAD AND MOLYBDENUM NUCLEI

Journal Article · · Arbok Univ. Bergen, Mat.-Nat. Ser.

The wave equation is solved for a potential consisting of a complex square well and a real Thomas spin-orbit term. This optical model is applied to the study of elastic scattering of unpolarized neutrons by lead and molybdenum nuclei at incident energies 3.3 and 3.7 Mev, respectively. The differential cross section and the polarization are calculated in two limiting cases: zero compound elastic scattering and maximum compound elastic scattering. The theoretical argular distributions and the polarization for scattering in lead are compared with experimental results. As to the polarization for scattering in molybdenum no such comparison is made, because experimental results are not yet available. (auth)
