THE ELASTIC SCATTERING OF NEUTRONS BY COMPLEX NUCLEI. THE OPTICAL NUCLEAR MODEL

Journal Article · · Arbok Univ. Bergen, Mat.-Nat. Ser.
OSTI ID:4069895
The exact theory for elastic scattering of unpolarized neutrons by complex nuclei is presented. Formulas for the elastic and reaction cross sections, the elastic angular distribution, and polarization degree are developed in terms of a partial wave analysis. The statistical compound nucleus model is introduced and applied to the case of many overlapping levels. It is shown how the elastic scattering can be split up into two different parts termed shape elastic and compound elastic scattering. Definitions of elastic transmission and decay probabilities are given. The assumption of random phases is shown to have the consequence that compound elastic scattered particles can not be polarized.
