L FLUORESCENCE YIELDS IN HEAVY ELEMENTS

Journal Article · · Physical Review (U.S.) Superseded in part by Phys. Rev. A, Phys. Rev. B: Solid State, Phys. Rev. C, and Phys. Rev. D
L x-ray fluorescence yields for the Ra, Th, U, Pu, and Cm daughters of even-even alpha emitters were measured by three methods. Internal conversion of E2 gammas from the decay of these nuclides produces approximately equal numbers of L/sub II/ and L/sub III/ vacancies and practically no L/sub I/ vacancies; the yields reported here are, therefore, averages of the L/sub II/ and L/sub III/ shell yields. The results are: Ra, 0.480 plus or minus 0.012; Th, 0.488 plus or minus 0.008; U, 0.478 plus or minus 0.009; Pu, 0.549 plus or minus 0.009; and Cm, 0.531 plus or minus 0.010. (auth)
