Closely spaced triplet lines that arise from a common lower level or from lower sublevels with small energy difference are used. For such lines it is assumed that both the source function in the line and the frequency dependence of the selective absorption coefficient are the same at any depth of the region of formation of the lines in the atmosphere and depend on this depth in the same way. The basic data are the residual intensities of the individual lines of the triplet measured for each line at a number of points of the profile at strictly equal distances from its center and at different distances from the center of the solar disk. They are expressed in terms of the continuum intensity in the center of the solar disk for the average wavelength of the triplet interval. Such observations enable one to avoid the usual assumption that the source function in the line is constant within the line. In fact, a frequency dependence of this function is revealed by the use of the method. Calculation in accordance with Eqs. (12) or (13) enables one to determine the source function in the line and its wavelength dependence within the line, to construct simultaneously a model of the solar atmosphere by determining the source function in the continuum from observations at points of the profile in its central part and in the wing, to find the ratio of the selective and continuous absorption coefficients as a function of the optical depth in the continuum, and to find the wavelength dependence of the coefficients of both selective absorption and selective emission at different optical depths. Equations (13) can be applied to doublet lines without constructing a model of the atmosphere, which can be assumed known. (AIP)
